THE LANDES COAST
VIEW FROM THE SKY
Bordering the departments of Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, Gers and Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the Landes department is one of five in the Aquitaine region. Bathed in the west by the Atlantic Ocean along a 106 km long sandy coastline, which forms the “Côte d’Argent” and is bordered by high dunes, the Landes has the second longest coastline in mainland France.
The Landes forest is the largest in Western Europe, with a surface area of almost one million hectares. Mainly private, it includes some state-owned parts located near the coastline.
The Landes department has a mild winter and hot summer climate.
